Gliding through rolling hills, farms and forests, large and small towns, the Brandywine, White Clay, and Red Clay Creeks, and Christina River constitute the watershed of the Christina River Basin, before continuing into the Delaware River. This watershed provides more than 75% of the water supply for residents and businesses in New Castle County, Delaware.
The Christina River Watershed Cleanup’s mission has always been the removal of man-made debris from within this beautiful watershed, while raising public awareness for pollution prevention. Since the Cleanup began in 1992, more than 360 tons of tires, appliances, household items, and other trash have been cleared from within the watershed.
Join hundreds of volunteers and help clean the single most important natural resource in our region! A solid effort is needed each year to keep each of these waterways as free from debris as possible while also improving wildlife habitat.
Do you have a few hours to spend along Naamans Creek in northern Delaware? How about you and your coworkers volunteering near I-95 within Churchmans Marsh? What about a little time working near White Clay Creek, in Delaware or Pennsylvania?
* Please note the new ending time of 11:00 AM for the 2017 Cleanup *
2016 Cleanup T-shirt Design Contest Winner
The design shown here was created by Ramiro Lopez-Villalobos, a senior studying Graphic Arts at Delcastle Technical High School. Ramiro’s been fascinated with all forms of art ever since his 6th-grade art teacher introduced him to oil painting and drawing.
He sketched for fun all throughout middle school, and high school presented the opportunity to learn graphic design and print production with Mr. John Rykaczewski at Delcastle. Here he’s taken a more modern approach to a traditional element for Cleanup t-shirts, the Great Blue Heron, a majestic bird found throughout the watershed.
Ramiro loves drawing on his “imagination combined with today’s technology to create graphic designs.” What’s more, he said, “I really want to learn more about oil painting in the future.” He intends to advance as a graphic designer after high school by attending visual communication classes at Delaware Tech Community College.
The Edward W. Cooch, Jr. Environmental Scholarship fund has been established to honor the late Mr. Cooch, or simply Ned, as he was known to family and friends. As an avid environmentalist with a deep passion for the natural lands and water resources of Delaware, Ned was one of the founders of the Christina Conservancy and a driving force behind the creation of the Christina River Watershed Cleanup.
